Ingredients

  • 12 sheets lasagna noodles
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground Italian sausage
  • 1 large yellow onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 28 ounces canned crushed tomatoes
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons black pepper
  • 15 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1.5 cups grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions. Drain and lay the noodles flat on a parchment-lined baking sheet to prevent sticking.

Step 3

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and Italian sausage, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned, about 6-8 minutes. Drain any excess grease.

Step 4

Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet and cook for 4-5 minutes until softened and fragrant.

Step 5

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, basil, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Reduce the heat and let the sauce simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 6

In a medium-sized bowl, mix the ricotta cheese, 2 cups of shredded mozzarella cheese, 1 cup of grated Parmesan cheese, the egg, and fresh parsley until well combined.

Step 7

Spread 1 cup of the meat sauce on the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish.

Step 8

Place 3 lasagna noodles over the sauce, slightly overlapping. Spread 1/3 of the ricotta mixture evenly over the noodles, then top with 1/3 of the remaining meat sauce and sprinkle with 1/2 cup of mozzarella cheese.

Step 9

Repeat the layering process two more times: noodles, ricotta mixture, meat sauce, mozzarella cheese.

Step 10

For the final layer, place the last 3 noodles on top, cover with the remaining meat sauce, and sprinkle with the remaining 1/2 cup of mozzarella cheese and 1/2 cup of Parmesan cheese.

Step 11

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil (be careful not to let the foil touch the cheese) and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, until the cheese on top is golden and bubbly.

Step 12

Let the lasagna cool for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy your Hand Me Down Lasagna with a sprinkle of fresh parsley if desired!
