Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef (80% lean, 20% fat)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon onion powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese slices
  • 2 jalapeño peppers (sliced)
  • 4 burger buns
  • 2 tablespoons butter (softened)
  • 4 lettuce leaves
  • 1 tomato (sliced)
  • 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons sriracha sauce

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, salt, ground black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix gently until just combined. Be careful not to overwork the meat.

Step 2

Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into burger patties. Make a small indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent it from puffing up during cooking.

Step 3

For the Classic Burger variation, brush both sides of two of the patties with melted butter and set aside.

Step 4

For the Spicy Jalapeño Burger variation, press a few slices of jalapeño peppers into both sides of the remaining two patties.

Step 5

Preheat a grill or stovetop skillet over medium-high heat. Place the patties on the grill/skillet and cook for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C). During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheddar cheese on top of each patty and cover to let it melt.

Step 6

Cut the burger buns in half and lightly butter the insides. Toast the buns on the grill or in a skillet for 1-2 minutes until golden brown.

Step 7

Assemble the Classic Burgers: Spread 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise on the bottom bun, place a lettuce leaf followed by a tomato slice, add a butter-brushed patty with melted cheese, and top with the toasted bun.

Step 8

Assemble the Spicy Jalapeño Burgers: Mix 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise with 1/2 tablespoon of sriracha sauce. Spread this spicy mayo on the bottom bun, place a lettuce leaf, add a jalapeño-studded patty with melted cheese, and top with the toasted bun.

Step 9

Serve immediately with your favorite sides, such as fries or a fresh salad.
