Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef (80% lean, 20% fat)
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Black pepper
  • 0.5 tsp Garlic powder
  • 0.5 tsp Onion powder
  • 4 Hamburger buns
  • 4 Cheddar cheese slices (optional)
  • 4 Lettuce leaves
  • 8 Tomato slices
  • 8 Pickles
  • 4 Red onion rings
  • 4 tbsp Ketchup
  • 4 tsp Mustard

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix gently with your hands until just combined. Avoid overworking the meat to keep the burgers tender.

Step 2

Divide the meat mixture into 4 equal portions (about 4 ounces each). Shape each portion into a patty about 3/4-inch thick. Use your thumb to press a small indentation into the center of each patty—this helps prevent the burgers from puffing up while cooking.

Step 3

Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Lightly oil the grates or skillet to prevent sticking.

Step 4

Place the burger patties onto the grill or skillet. Cook for 3-4 minutes on the first side until the bottom is nicely browned and slightly charred.

Step 5

Flip the patties and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes on the second side, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F for medium-well. Add a slice of cheddar cheese on top of each patty during the last minute of cooking if desired, and cover to allow the cheese to melt.

Step 6

While the burgers are cooking, toast the hamburger buns on the grill or in a dry skillet for 1-2 minutes until golden and warm.

Step 7

Assemble the hamburgers by layering the bottom bun with lettuce, tomato slices, a burger patty, pickles, red onion rings, ketchup, and mustard. Top with the other half of the bun.

Step 8

Serve immediately with your favorite sides such as fries, coleslaw, or a simple salad. Enjoy your classic homemade hamburgers!
