Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ham steak
  • 2 tbsp Unsalted butter
  • 0.25 cup Brown sugar
  • 2 medium Apples (firm varieties, such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 0.5 tsp Ground cinnamon
  • 0.125 tsp Nutmeg (optional)
  • 2 tbsp Water
  • 1 tbsp Olive oil (or additional butter)

Directions

Step 1

Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin wedges. Set aside.

Step 2

Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Once melted, add the apple slices.

Step 3

Sprinkle the brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and nutmeg (if using) over the apples. Stir to coat evenly.

Step 4

Pour in 2 tablespoons of water and cook the apples for 6-8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are tender and caramelized. Remove the apples from the skillet and set aside.

Step 5

In the same skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil (or butter) over medium-high heat.

Step 6

Add the ham steak to the skillet and sear for 3-4 minutes on each side until it is heated through and develops a golden-brown crust.

Step 7

Reduce the heat to medium-low and return the caramelized apples to the skillet alongside the ham steak. Let everything heat together for 2-3 minutes to combine the flavors.

Step 8

Remove from heat and serve the ham steak with the brown sugar apples on the side. Enjoy warm!
