Ingredients

  • 2 lbs Yukon Gold potatoes
  • 2 cups Gruyere cheese, shredded
  • 1.5 cups Heavy cream
  • 0.5 cups Whole milk
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp Fresh thyme leaves
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Black pepper, freshly ground
  • 0.25 tsp Nutmeg, freshly grated

Directions

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with unsalted butter.

Step 2

Peel the Yukon Gold potatoes and slice them thinly into 1/8-inch rounds using a mandoline slicer or a sharp knife. Set aside in a bowl of cold water to prevent browning.

Step 3

In a medium saucepan, combine the heavy cream, whole milk, minced garlic, fresh thyme, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Heat over medium heat until the mixture is warm but not boiling, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat.

Step 4

Drain the potato slices and pat them dry with a kitchen towel or paper towels.

Step 5

Spread one-third of the potato slices evenly over the bottom of the prepared baking dish, slightly overlapping them in rows.

Step 6

Pour one-third of the warm cream mixture over the potatoes, then sprinkle one-third of the shredded Gruyere cheese evenly on top.

Step 7

Repeat the layering process with the remaining potatoes, cream mixture, and Gruyere cheese, finishing with a final layer of cheese on top.

Step 8

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes.

Step 9

After 40 minutes, remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender, the cream mixture is bubbling, and the top is golden brown.

Step 10

Remove the dish from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with additional fresh thyme, if desired.
