Ingredients

  • 500 grams fresh green beans
  • 100 grams bacon
  • 1 medium yellow onion
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Directions

Step 1

Wash the green beans and trim off the ends.

Step 2

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the green beans and blanch them for 3-4 minutes until slightly tender but still crisp. Drain and set aside.

Step 3

Chop the bacon into small pieces. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and cook the bacon until crispy, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and set it aside on a paper towel to drain.

Step 4

Dice the onion into small pieces. In the same skillet with the bacon grease, add the diced onion and sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened and translucent.

Step 5

Add the butter to the skillet and allow it to melt. Stir in the white vinegar, sugar, water, salt, and black pepper, cooking for about 2 minutes until the mixture is well combined and slightly reduced.

Step 6

Add the blanched green beans to the skillet and toss to coat them thoroughly in the vinegar and onion mixture. Cook for another 3-5 minutes until the beans are tender and warmed through.

Step 7

Stir in the crispy bacon pieces and mix well. Adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper if needed.

Step 8

Serve the Green Beans German Style warm as a flavorful side dish.
