Ingredients

  • 250 grams unsalted butter
  • 200 grams granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 500 grams all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 60 milliliters milk
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large bowl, beat the unsalted butter and granulated sugar together until pale and fluffy. This should take about 3-4 minutes with an electric mixer.

Step 3

Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract and orange zest.

Step 4

In a separate bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour and baking powder.

Step 5

Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk, starting and ending with the flour. Mix until a soft, pliable dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour, one tablespoon at a time (but avoid overworking the dough).

Step 6

Pinch off a small piece of dough (about the size of a walnut) and roll it into a thin, long rope (about 15 cm or 6 inches). Fold the rope in half and twist the two ends together to form a spiral or braid shape. Continue shaping the remaining dough.

Step 7

Place the shaped biscuits on the prepared baking sheets, leaving a little space between each one.

Step 8

In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and water to create an egg wash. Brush the egg wash over the top of each biscuit. If desired, sprinkle sesame seeds on top for added texture and flavor.

Step 9

Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown. Keep an eye on them to prevent overbaking.

Step 10

Remove the biscuits from the oven and allow them to cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 11

Serve the Greek biscuits with coffee, tea, or enjoy them as a snack. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
