Ingredients

  • 2 cups Fresh or frozen green peas
  • 1 medium, finely chopped Onion
  • 2 medium, finely chopped Tomato
  • 3 cloves, minced Garlic
  • 1 teaspoon, freshly grated Ginger
  • 2 tablespoons Vegetable oil or ghee
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • 0.5 teaspoons Turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon Coriander powder
  • 0.5 teaspoons Garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon (or to taste) Salt
  • 1.5 cups Water
  • 2 tablespoons, chopped (optional for garnish) Fresh cilantro

Directions

Step 1

Heat the vegetable oil or ghee in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for about 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 3

Stir in the finely chopped onion and sauté for 3–4 minutes until golden and soft.

Step 4

Add the minced garlic and grated ginger. Cook for another 1–2 minutes, stirring frequently, until aromatic.

Step 5

Add the chopped tomatoes and cook for 4–5 minutes, stirring often, until the tomatoes soften and begin to break down into a paste.

Step 6

Sprinkle in the turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well to combine the spices with the onion-tomato mixture.

Step 7

Add the green peas and stir to coat them in the spice mixture.

Step 8

Pour in the water, stir well, and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.

Step 9

Cover the skillet and let the peas cook for 8–10 minutes until tender. Adjust the cook time based on whether you are using fresh or frozen peas.

Step 10

Remove the cover, stir in the garam masala, and allow the gravy to thicken slightly for 1–2 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.

Step 11

Turn off the heat and garnish with freshly chopped cilantro, if desired.

Step 12

Serve the Gravy Peas hot with rice, roti, or as a side dish.
