Ingredients

  • 500 grams broccoli florets
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1.5 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 0.5 cups Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 0.5 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 0.25 teaspoons ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons black pepper
  • 1 clove garlic, minced

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish lightly with butter or cooking spray.

Step 2

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the broccoli florets and blanche them for 3-4 minutes until they are tender but still bright green. Drain and set aside.

Step 3

In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 4

Whisk in the flour, cooking for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw taste of the flour. Gradually pour in the milk while whisking to create a smooth sauce.

Step 5

Cook the sauce for 3-5 minutes, stirring frequently, until thickened. Reduce the heat to low and stir in the cheddar cheese, Parmesan cheese, nutmeg, salt, and pepper until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth.

Step 6

Arrange the blanched broccoli florets evenly in the prepared baking dish. Pour the cheese sauce over the broccoli, spreading it evenly with a spatula.

Step 7

In a small bowl, combine the panko breadcrumbs with the olive oil. Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture evenly over the top of the broccoli and cheese.

Step 8

Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbling.

Step 9

Remove from the oven, allow it to cool for 5 minutes, and serve warm. Enjoy your Golden Broccoli Gratin!
