Ingredients

  • 1 cup Basmati rice
  • 2 cups Water
  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • 1 piece Cinnamon stick
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 piece Bay leaf
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh cilantro, chopped (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak it in cold water for 15 minutes. Drain and set aside.

Step 2

In a medium saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and allow them to sizzle for 30 seconds until aromatic.

Step 3

Add the minced garlic and sauté for 1 minute, stirring frequently to avoid burning.

Step 4

Stir in the turmeric powder, cinnamon stick, and bay leaf, cooking for another 30 seconds to release their flavors.

Step 5

Add the drained basmati rice to the pan, stirring gently to coat the rice with the spice mixture.

Step 6

Pour in the water and add the salt. Stir briefly to combine and bring the mixture to a boil.

Step 7

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, and simmer for 15 minutes without lifting the lid.

Step 8

After 15 minutes, remove the pan from heat and let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Step 9

Remove the lid, fluff the rice with a fork, and discard the cinnamon stick and bay leaf.

Step 10

Garnish with chopped fresh cilantro, if desired, and serve warm.
