Ingredients

  • 4 medium russet potatoes
  • 0.5 cup green peas
  • 0.5 cup chickpea flour (besan)
  • 0.25 cup fresh cilantro
  • 1 medium green chili
  • 1 inch ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 0.5 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons oil

Directions

Step 1

Peel and boil the potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and allow them to cool slightly.

Step 2

In the meantime, boil the green peas for about 5 minutes until soft. Drain and set aside.

Step 3

Once the potatoes are cool enough to handle, mash them in a large mixing bowl using a potato masher or a fork.

Step 4

Finely chop the cilantro and the green chili. Grate the ginger.

Step 5

Add the chickpea flour, boiled green peas, chopped cilantro, green chili, grated ginger, ground cumin, red chili powder, garam masala, and salt to the mashed potatoes.

Step 6

Mix all the ingredients thoroughly until you have a uniform dough-like mixture that holds together.

Step 7

Divide the mixture into 8 equal portions and shape each portion into a patty, about 1/2 inch thick.

Step 8

Heat oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium heat.

Step 9

Once hot, place the patties in the skillet. Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, until they are golden brown and crispy.

Step 10

Transfer the cooked tikis to a paper towel-lined plate to absorb any excess oil.

Step 11

Serve the gluten-free aloo tikkis warm, with mint chutney or tamarind chutney on the side.
