Ingredients

  • 6 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 0.5 cups Brown sugar
  • 0.5 cups Molasses
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2.75 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon Ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoons Ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoons Ground cloves
  • 0.5 teaspoons Baking soda
  • 0.25 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 batch Royal icing (optional, for decorating)
  • 1 roll Ribbon or string

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter and brown sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the molasses and egg, and mix until well combined.

Step 2

In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, ground ginger, ground cinnamon, ground cloves, baking soda, and salt.

Step 3

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and mix until a dough forms.

Step 4

Divide the dough into two equal portions, flatten each into a disc, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (or up to overnight).

Step 5

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.

Step 6

On a floured surface, roll out one disc of dough to about 1/4-inch thickness. Cut shapes using cookie cutters and place them on the prepared baking sheets. Use a straw or a skewer to create a small hole near the top of each ornament for hanging.

Step 7

Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are firm and the centers are set.

Step 8

Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 9

Once cooled, decorate the ornaments with royal icing if desired. Let the icing dry completely.

Step 10

Thread ribbon or string through the holes and tie to create loops for hanging.
