Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons Unsalted butter, softened
  • 0.3333 cup Brown sugar, packed
  • 0.25 cup Molasses
  • 1 unit Egg yolk
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground ginger
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon Ground cloves
  • 0.25 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 0.125 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 cup Powdered sugar (for optional glaze or decoration)
  • 1-2 teaspoons Water (for glaze)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and brown sugar together until the mixture is light and fluffy.

Step 2

Add the molasses and egg yolk to the butter-sugar mixture and mix until well combined.

Step 3

In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, ground ginger, ground cinnamon, ground cloves, baking soda, and salt.

Step 4

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until a dough forms. Be careful not to overmix.

Step 5

Divide the dough into two equal portions, flatten into discs, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour or until firm.

Step 6

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 7

On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disc of dough to about 1/4-inch thickness. Use a gingerbread boy cookie cutter to cut out shapes and carefully transfer them to the prepared baking sheet.

Step 8

Re-roll any scraps of dough and continue cutting out shapes until all the dough is used.

Step 9

Bake the cookies for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are set but not overbrowned. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 10

For decoration, mix powdered sugar with water (1-2 teaspoons) to make a glaze. Pipe or brush onto the cookies as desired, and let it set before serving or storing.

Step 11

Store the gingerbread boy cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
