Ingredients

  • 2 cups Water
  • 1 cup Whole milk (or any milk alternative)
  • 2 teaspoons Black tea leaves or tea bags
  • 1 inch piece Fresh ginger
  • 4 pods Green cardamom pods
  • 1 stick Cinnamon stick
  • 3 pieces Cloves
  • 5 pieces Black peppercorns
  • 2 teaspoons Sugar (or sweetener of choice)

Directions

Step 1

Peel and thinly slice the fresh ginger, then gently crush it using the back of a knife or a mortar and pestle.

Step 2

Crush the green cardamom pods slightly to release their flavor.

Step 3

In a small saucepan, bring 2 cups of water to a boil over medium heat.

Step 4

Once the water is boiling, add the crushed ginger, cardamom pods, cinnamon stick, cloves, and black peppercorns to the saucepan.

Step 5

Reduce the heat to low and let the spices simmer for 2-3 minutes to release their flavors.

Step 6

Add the black tea leaves (or tea bags) into the saucepan and simmer for another 2 minutes.

Step 7

Stir in the milk and sugar, then increase the heat just slightly to bring the mixture to a gentle boil. Be careful not to let it boil over.

Step 8

Once the tea comes to a boil, reduce the heat again and let it simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes. The flavors will meld during this time.

Step 9

Strain the masala chai into two cups using a fine mesh strainer to remove the tea leaves and spices.

Step 10

Serve hot and enjoy your comforting Ginger Cardamom Masala Chai.
