Ingredients

  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 2 cups Granulated sugar
  • 0.75 cup Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons Baking powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons Baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 0.5 cup Vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 1 cup Boiling water
  • 1 cup Unsalted butter (softened)
  • 3 cups Powdered sugar
  • 0.33 cup Heavy cream
  • 0.5 cup Semi-sweet chocolate chips (melted and slightly cooled)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Step 3

Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until well combined.

Step 4

Slowly pour in the boiling water while whisking. The batter will be thin, but this is normal. Mix until smooth.

Step 5

Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans.

Step 6

Bake in the preheated oven for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 7

Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 8

While the cakes are cooling, prepare the frosting. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer until creamy.

Step 9

Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating well after each addition.

Step 10

Mix in the heavy cream and continue beating until the frosting is light and fluffy.

Step 11

Fold in the melted semi-sweet chocolate until fully incorporated and the frosting is smooth.

Step 12

Once the cakes are completely cooled, place one cake layer on a serving plate or cake stand.

Step 13

Spread a generous layer of frosting on top of the first cake layer.

Step 14

Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining frosting.

Step 15

For an optional finishing touch, decorate the cake with chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or fresh berries.

Step 16

Refrigerate the cake for 20–30 minutes before slicing to set the frosting.

Step 17

Cut into slices and serve. Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
