Ingredients

  • 0.5 cup Dried green split peas
  • 0.5 cup Dried red lentils
  • 0.3 cup Pearled barley
  • 0.3 cup Dried white navy beans
  • 0.3 cup Dried kidney beans
  • 0.3 cup Uncooked long-grain white rice
  • 3 tablespoons Beef bouillon granules
  • 2 tablespoons Dried minced onion
  • 2 tablespoons Dried parsley flakes
  • 1 tablespoon Dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon Dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon Dried oregano
  • 0.5 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt

Directions

Step 1

Layer the dried split peas, lentils, barley, navy beans, kidney beans, and rice in a large glass jar (or another airtight container) in the order listed. Use a spoon or funnel to keep the layers neat and level.

Step 2

In a small zippered plastic bag or a separate section of the jar, mix the beef bouillon granules, dried onion, parsley flakes, basil, thyme, oregano, garlic powder, pepper, and salt. Seal the bag and place it inside the jar if it won't mix with the other layers.

Step 3

Seal the jar tightly with a lid, add a decorative ribbon or label, and write cooking instructions for the recipient on an attached card.

Step 4

To cook: Remove the seasoning packet (if used) and set aside. Rinse the beans thoroughly under cold water. In a large pot, combine the soup mix with 12 cups of water and 1 pound of cooked ground beef or diced ham (optional for added flavor). Bring to a boil over high heat.

Step 5

Stir in the seasoning mix. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 90 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until the beans are tender.

Step 6

Serve hot and enjoy with a slice of crusty bread or crackers.
