Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 large yellow onions
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 3 cloves garlic cloves
  • 2.5 cups beef broth
  • 0.5 cups dry white wine
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
  • 1 leaf bay leaf
  • 4 cups French bread, sliced and cubed
  • 1.5 cups shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons black pepper

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

Peel and slice the yellow onions into thin rings. Mince the garlic cloves.

Step 3

In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and stir to coat them in the butter.

Step 4

Reduce the heat to medium-low. Sprinkle the sugar over the onions and cook for 30-35 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are deeply caramelized and golden brown.

Step 5

Add the minced garlic to the skillet and cook for 1-2 more minutes, until fragrant.

Step 6

Pour in the beef broth and white wine. Stir in the thyme leaves and add the bay leaf. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes to combine the flavors. Remove the bay leaf before proceeding.

Step 7

Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with olive oil. Spread half of the cubed French bread across the bottom of the dish.

Step 8

Spoon half of the caramelized onion mixture over the bread. Top with half of the shredded Gruyère and mozzarella cheeses.

Step 9

Layer the remaining cubed bread, followed by the rest of the onion mixture and cheeses.

Step 10

Season the top with salt and black pepper.

Step 11

Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes.

Step 12

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the top is bubbly and golden brown.

Step 13

Let cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Enjoy your savory French Onion Casserole!
