Ingredients

  • 500 grams black beans (cooked and drained)
  • 500 milliliters water
  • 200 grams granulated sugar
  • 200 grams condensed milk
  • 3 units clove
  • 1 unit cinnamon stick
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the cooked black beans thoroughly under cold water if they are canned. Drain well.

Step 2

Blend the black beans with 500 milliliters of water in a blender until smooth and creamy. Pass the mixture through a fine sieve or cheesecloth to remove any solids, leaving you with a smooth bean puree.

Step 3

In a large heavy-bottomed pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the black bean puree and stir well.

Step 4

Add the granulated sugar, condensed milk, cloves, and the cinnamon stick to the pot. Stir to combine.

Step 5

Cook the mixture over medium-low heat, stirring continuously with a wooden spoon to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pot.

Step 6

Continue stirring for about 45-50 minutes, or until the mixture thickens and darkens to a deep, rich color. Remove the cloves and cinnamon stick at this point.

Step 7

During the last 5 minutes of cooking, stir in the vanilla extract and mix well.

Step 8

Once the mixture reaches a thick, pudding-like consistency, remove it from the heat and let it cool slightly.

Step 9

Transfer the cooled Frejoles Colados into a serving dish or individual bowls and let it cool completely to room temperature.

Step 10

Optionally, refrigerate for a few hours for a firmer texture before serving. Serve as a dessert, garnished with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon or a few extra cloves, if desired.
