Ingredients

  • 500 grams Fish fillets (tilapia, cod, or any firm white fish)
  • 2 tablespoons Lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 tablespoons Vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • 2 medium Onions (finely chopped)
  • 4 pieces Garlic cloves (minced)
  • 1 teaspoon Ginger (grated)
  • 2 large Tomatoes (pureed or finely chopped)
  • 1 teaspoon Red chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons Coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon Garam masala
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh cilantro (chopped)
  • 1 cup Water

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the fish fillets under cold water and pat them dry with a paper towel.

Step 2

In a bowl, marinate the fish with lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and turmeric powder. Set aside for 15 minutes.

Step 3

Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large pan over medium heat.

Step 4

Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for about 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 5

Add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.

Step 6

Stir in the minced garlic and grated ginger. Cook for 1-2 minutes until aromatic.

Step 7

Add the tomatoes, red chili powder, coriander powder, and the remaining 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Cook until the tomato mixture thickens and the oil begins to separate, about 8-10 minutes.

Step 8

Gently add the marinated fish fillets to the pan. Let them cook for 2 minutes on each side without breaking the pieces.

Step 9

Pour 1 cup of water into the pan. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes, allowing the fish to absorb the flavors of the masala.

Step 10

Sprinkle garam masala and fresh cilantro over the dish. Mix gently to avoid breaking the fish.

Step 11

Serve hot with steamed rice or naan, and enjoy your flavorful Fish Masala!
