Ingredients

  • 450 grams All-purpose flour
  • 50 grams Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 teaspoons Instant yeast
  • 250 milliliters Whole milk
  • 50 grams Unsalted butter
  • 1 large Egg
  • 200 grams Powdered sugar (for icing)
  • 2 tablespoons Water (for icing)
  • 2 drops Food coloring (optional)
  • 30 grams Sprinkles (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast.

Step 2

In a small saucepan, heat the milk and butter together over medium heat until the butter is melted and the mixture is warm but not hot (about 38–40°C).

Step 3

Add the warm milk mixture and the egg to the dry ingredients, and mix until a soft dough forms.

Step 4

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic, or use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5–7 minutes.

Step 5

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean tea towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

Step 6

Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 10 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth, elongated roll about 10 cm long.

Step 7

Place the shaped rolls on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, leaving some space between each bun. Cover loosely with a tea towel and let rise for another 30 minutes, or until puffed up.

Step 8

Preheat your oven to 180°C (356°F).

Step 9

Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 12–15 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through. Allow them to cool completely on a wire rack before icing.

Step 10

For the icing, sift the powdered sugar into a bowl. Gradually add the water, a tablespoon at a time, stirring until you have a thick but spreadable consistency. If desired, add food coloring and mix well.

Step 11

Spread the icing over the cooled buns and, if using, sprinkle with your choice of decorations such as sprinkles or shredded coconut.

Step 12

Allow the icing to set for 20–30 minutes before serving. Enjoy your homemade finger buns!
