Ingredients

  • 1 pound beef sirloin or round steak
  • 0.33 cup soy sauce
  • 0.25 cup calamansi or lemon juice
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 pieces onions, sliced into rings
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil
  • 0.5 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt

Directions

Step 1

Slice the beef into thin cuts, about 1/4 inch thick. Pound the slices lightly with a meat tenderizer to soften.

Step 2

In a bowl, combine the soy sauce, calamansi or lemon juice, and minced garlic. Add the beef slices, mix well, and marinate for at least 1 hour or overnight in the refrigerator for better flavor.

Step 3

Heat 1 tablespoon of cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Sear the beef slices in small batches until browned on both sides. Remove and set aside.

Step 4

In the same pan, add the remaining tablespoon of cooking oil. Sauté the onion rings until they become soft and caramelized, about 5 minutes. Set half of the onions aside for garnish.

Step 5

Pour the marinade into the pan and bring it to a simmer. Add the water, sugar, black pepper, and salt. Stir well.

Step 6

Return the seared beef to the pan and mix it with the sauce. Cover and cook over low to medium heat for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the beef is tender.

Step 7

Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Top with the reserved onion rings before serving.

Step 8

Serve hot with steamed white rice.
