Ingredients

  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 packet Active dry yeast
  • 1 cup Warm milk (around 110°F)
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 whole Large egg
  • 0.25 cup Water (warm, around 110°F as needed)
  • 2 tablespoons Milk or egg wash for brushing the tops

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of the flour, the sugar, salt, and the packet of active dry yeast.

Step 2

Heat the milk to about 110°F, then stir it into the dry ingredients. Mix until a smooth batter forms.

Step 3

Add the softened butter and the egg, stirring until fully incorporated.

Step 4

Gradually add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition. You may use your hands or a stand mixer with a dough hook for this step.

Step 5

Add the warm water, a tablespoon at a time, if the dough feels too stiff or dry. The dough should be soft and slightly sticky, but not overly wet.

Step 6

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic.

Step 7

Place the dough in an oiled bowl, turning it to coat the surface, then cover with a damp kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until the dough doubles in size.

Step 8

Punch the dough down and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a round bun and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them a few inches apart.

Step 9

Cover the buns loosely with plastic wrap and let them rise for another 30 minutes, or until they are puffy.

Step 10

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Before baking, brush the tops of the buns lightly with milk or an egg wash for a shiny finish.

Step 11

Bake the buns for 18-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Step 12

Transfer the buns to a wire rack to cool completely before serving.
