Ingredients

  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon Granulated sugar
  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 3 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 1 Egg
  • 3.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 0.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.75 cup Brown sugar (for filling)
  • 1 tablespoon Ground cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons Unsalted butter (softened, for filling)
  • 1 cup Pecans (chopped)
  • 0.75 cup Brown sugar (for topping)
  • 0.5 cup Unsalted butter (melted, for topping)
  • 0.25 cup Honey

Directions

Step 1

Warm the milk in a small saucepan or microwave until it reaches about 100-110°F (warm to the touch but not hot). Stir in 1 tablespoon of sugar and sprinkle the yeast over the milk. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.

Step 2

In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the frothy milk mixture, 3 tablespoons of melted butter, the egg, 3 cups of flour, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Mix on medium speed until combined.

Step 3

Slowly add the remaining 1/2 cup of flour while kneading the dough on low speed until it forms a soft, slightly sticky ball (about 5-7 minutes). If kneading by hand, it may take 8-10 minutes.

Step 4

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with plastic wrap or a damp towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

Step 5

While the dough is rising, prepare the caramel topping. In a small saucepan, combine 3/4 cup brown sugar, melted butter, and honey. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar has dissolved. Pour the mixture into the bottom of a greased 9x13-inch pan. Sprinkle the chopped pecans evenly over the caramel.

Step 6

Once the dough has doubled in size, roll it out on a lightly floured surface into a large rectangle, approximately 12x18 inches.

Step 7

Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough. Mix 3/4 cup brown sugar and 1 tablespoon cinnamon in a small bowl, then sprinkle the mixture evenly over the buttered dough.

Step 8

Starting at one long edge, tightly roll up the dough into a log. Pinch the seams to seal, then cut into 12 evenly sized slices.

Step 9

Arrange the slices cut-side up in the prepared pan with the caramel and pecans. Cover the pan loosely and let the buns rise in a warm place for another 30-45 minutes, or until puffed.

Step 10

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the sticky buns for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

Step 11

Remove the pan from the oven and let the buns cool for 5 minutes. Carefully invert the pan onto a large platter or baking sheet to release the buns and caramel topping.

Step 12

Serve warm and enjoy the gooey, caramelized goodness!
