Ingredients

  • 750 ml red wine
  • 1 large orange
  • 6 pieces cloves
  • 1 piece cinnamon stick
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 pinch nutmeg
  • 60 ml brandy (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Wash and dry the orange. Use a sharp knife to carefully stud the orange with cloves by piercing the skin of the orange and inserting the clove stems.

Step 2

Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F). Place the clove-studded orange on a baking tray and roast in the oven for 15 minutes. This step helps to release the citrus oils and infuse the wine with a deeper flavor.

Step 3

In a large saucepan, pour the red wine and place it over medium-low heat. Do not let the wine boil as it can alter the flavor of the drink.

Step 4

Add the roasted orange to the saucepan, along with the cinnamon stick and sugar. Stir gently to dissolve the sugar.

Step 5

Grate a small pinch of nutmeg into the wine for added warmth and spice.

Step 6

Lower the heat and let the mixture simmer gently for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.

Step 7

If desired, add the brandy just before serving for an extra kick.

Step 8

Carefully remove the orange, cinnamon stick, and any floating cloves before serving. Pour the spiced wine into heatproof glasses or mugs and serve warm.
