Ingredients

  • 1 large Egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon Granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup Whole milk
  • 0.25 cup Heavy cream
  • 0.25 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 0.125 teaspoon Ground nutmeg
  • 0.125 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon Rum or bourbon (optional)
  • 1 dollop Whipped cream (optional, for garnish)
  • 1 pinch Ground nutmeg or cinnamon (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and granulated sugar until the mixture is smooth and slightly pale. Set aside.

Step 2

In a small saucepan over medium-low heat, combine the whole milk, heavy cream, vanilla extract, ground nutmeg, and ground cinnamon. Heat gently until the mixture is warm but not boiling, stirring occasionally to prevent scorching.

Step 3

Slowly pour a small amount of the warm milk mixture into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to temper the egg. Gradually add a little more of the milk mixture, whisking continuously, until about half of the milk has been incorporated.

Step 4

Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining milk mixture while whisking constantly. Continue to cook over low heat, stirring constantly, for 2-3 minutes, or until the mixture thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon. Do not let it boil, as this will curdle the egg.

Step 5

Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the optional rum or bourbon, if using.

Step 6

Pour the eggnog into a mug. If desired, top with a dollop of whipped cream and a pinch of ground nutmeg or cinnamon as garnish.

Step 7

Serve immediately and enjoy this single-serving homemade eggnog!
