Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef
  • 0.5 cup Breadcrumbs
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 tbsp Ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 0.5 tsp Garlic powder
  • 0.5 tsp Onion powder
  • 0.75 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Black pepper
  • 1 tbsp Vegetable oil
  • 1 medium Yellow onion
  • 8 oz Mushrooms
  • 1.5 cups Beef broth
  • 1.5 tbsp All-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp Butter
  • 1 tsp Soy sauce

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until evenly combined.

Step 2

Shape the mixture into 4 equally sized oval patties, about 3/4 inch thick.

Step 3

Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties to the skillet and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.

Step 4

In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and cook for 3-4 minutes, or until softened.

Step 5

Add the mushrooms to the skillet and cook for an additional 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms are lightly browned.

Step 6

Sprinkle the flour over the onions and mushrooms. Stir well and cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.

Step 7

Gradually whisk in the beef broth and soy sauce. Bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring constantly, until the gravy thickens.

Step 8

Return the browned patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Spoon some of the gravy over the patties.

Step 9

Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and simmer for 10 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).

Step 10

Serve the Salisbury steaks hot, smothered in the rich onion and mushroom gravy, alongside mashed potatoes or your favorite side dish.
