Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.25 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 5 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8-inch square baking pan or line it with parchment paper.

Step 2

In the baking pan itself (or in a mixing bowl if you prefer), combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix well to evenly distribute the dry ingredients.

Step 3

Make three small wells in the dry ingredients. In one well, pour the vinegar. In the second well, pour the vanilla extract. In the third well, pour the vegetable oil.

Step 4

Pour the water over all the ingredients in the pan (or bowl) and stir until the batter is smooth and fully combined. Be sure to scrape the bottom and edges to incorporate all the flour.

Step 5

If you mixed the batter in a separate bowl, pour it into the prepared baking pan and spread it out evenly.

Step 6

Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 7

Remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before slicing and serving. You can dust it with powdered sugar or frost it, if desired.
