Ingredients

  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 0.25 cups Warm water
  • 1 cups Buttermilk
  • 0.25 cups Unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 tablespoons Butter (for brushing)

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast in warm water. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, until it becomes frothy.

Step 2

In a small saucepan, gently warm the buttermilk and butter together until the butter is melted. Remove from heat and let cool slightly so it does not cook the egg in the later steps.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the buttermilk mixture, sugar, and salt. Mix well.

Step 4

Add the frothy yeast mixture and the egg to the bowl, mixing until fully incorporated.

Step 5

Gradually add the all-purpose flour, one cup at a time, mixing after each addition. Knead the dough either by hand or with the dough hook attachment for 6-8 minutes, until it’s smooth and elastic.

Step 6

Transfer the dough to a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

Step 7

Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place them in a greased baking dish or on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Step 8

Cover the rolls with a kitchen towel and let them rise again for 30-45 minutes, until doubled in size.

Step 9

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 10

Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 18-22 minutes, or until golden brown.

Step 11

Remove the rolls from the oven and immediately brush the tops with melted butter for a glossy, tender finish.

Step 12

Serve warm and enjoy!
