Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.25 teaspoons baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.75 cups unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1.5 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 0.5 cups buttermilk

Directions

Step 1

In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar together using an electric mixer on medium speed until fluffy and pale, about 3 minutes.

Step 3

Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.

Step 4

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients in three additions, alternating with the buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.

Step 5

Divide the dough into two portions and flatten each into a disk. Wrap each disk in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or until firm.

Step 6

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.

Step 7

On a lightly floured surface, roll out one portion of chilled dough to about 1/4-inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to cut out desired shapes and transfer them to the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 1 inch apart.

Step 8

Gather and re-roll any scraps and continue cutting out cookies until all the dough is used.

Step 9

Bake in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes or until the edges are set and just beginning to turn golden. Be careful not to overbake.

Step 10

Remove the baking sheets from the oven and allow the cookies to cool for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 11

Once cooled, decorate the cookies with icing, sprinkles, or other decorations as desired. Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
