Ingredients

  • 14 oz firm tofu
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 4 cups broccoli florets
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, minced
  • 3 tablespoons neutral cooking oil (e.g., vegetable oil)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 2 teaspoons rice vinegar
  • 2 green onions, sliced (optional, for garnish)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Press the tofu: Wrap the tofu block in a clean kitchen towel and place a heavy object, such as a skillet, on top. Let it press for 10-15 minutes to remove excess moisture.

Step 2

Cut the pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes and transfer to a mixing bowl.

Step 3

In a small bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of soy sauce and 1 teaspoon of Chinese five-spice powder. Pour this over the tofu cubes and toss to coat evenly. Let the tofu marinate for at least 10 minutes.

Step 4

In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and water to create a slurry. Set aside.

Step 5

Heat 2 tablespoons of neutral cooking oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes in a single layer, frying until golden and crispy on all sides (about 2-3 minutes per side). Remove the tofu from the skillet and set aside.

Step 6

In the same skillet, add 1 more tablespoon of neutral cooking oil. Add the minced garlic and ginger, stirring for about 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 7

Add the broccoli florets to the skillet, stirring frequently. Pour in 2 tablespoons of water and cover the skillet with a lid. Steam the broccoli for 3-4 minutes until tender yet crisp.

Step 8

Uncover the skillet and add the hoisin sauce, remaining 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, rice vinegar, and the prepared cornstarch slurry. Stir everything together until the sauce thickens, about 1-2 minutes.

Step 9

Return the crispy tofu to the skillet. Drizzle with sesame oil and toss gently to combine, ensuring the tofu and broccoli are evenly coated in the sauce.

Step 10

Serve hot, garnished with sliced green onions and sesame seeds if desired. Pair with steamed rice or noodles for a complete meal.
