Ingredients

  • 6 medium Apples (e.g., Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 0.5 cup Granulated sugar
  • 0.25 cup Brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon Ground nutmeg
  • 1.25 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Rolled oats
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 cup Unsalted butter (cold, cut into cubes)
  • 0.5 cup Milk
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9-inch pie dish or baking dish.

Step 2

Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin slices. Place them in a large mixing bowl.

Step 3

Add the granulated sugar, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg to the apples. Toss until the apple slices are evenly coated, then transfer them to the prepared baking dish.

Step 4

In another mixing bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, baking powder, and salt.

Step 5

Cut the cold butter into the dry mixture using a pastry cutter or two forks until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 6

In a small bowl, whisk together the milk and vanilla extract. Pour this wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix; the batter should remain slightly lumpy.

Step 7

Drop spoonfuls of the batter over the apples in the baking dish, spreading gently to cover most of the surface. It's okay if some of the apples peek through.

Step 8

Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30–35 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender when pierced with a fork.

Step 9

Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 5–10 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm, optionally with a dollop of yogurt or a drizzle of maple syrup for a breakfast twist!
