Ingredients

  • 1 can (15 oz) Canned baked beans
  • 1 tablespoon Maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 0.5 teaspoon Smoked paprika
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 4 slices Thick-cut bread (sourdough or whole wheat)
  • 2 tablespoons Butter
  • 0.5 cup Cheddar cheese, grated
  • 4 slices Cooked bacon (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Open the can of baked beans and pour them into a small saucepan. Heat over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally.

Step 2

Stir in the maple syrup, Dijon mustard, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Simmer the beans gently for 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Remove from heat and set aside.

Step 3

While the beans are simmering, butter one side of each bread slice with a thin, even layer of butter.

Step 4

Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place two slices of bread, buttered side down, onto the skillet.

Step 5

Spoon a generous portion of the seasoned baked beans onto the unbuttered side of each bread slice. Sprinkle grated cheddar cheese on top of the baked beans.

Step 6

If using, add two slices of cooked bacon per sandwich on top of the cheese for extra flavor.

Step 7

Place the remaining slices of bread, buttered side up, on top to form sandwiches. Gently press them down with a spatula.

Step 8

Cook the sandwiches for 3-4 minutes on one side, until the bread is golden brown and crispy. Carefully flip the sandwiches and cook the other side for another 3-4 minutes, until the bread is golden and the cheese is melted.

Step 9

Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and let them rest for 1-2 minutes before slicing them in half.

Step 10

Garnish with chopped fresh parsley, if desired, and serve warm.
