Ingredients

  • 500 g Strong white bread flour
  • 10 g Salt
  • 7 g Dried yeast
  • 10 g Sugar
  • 320 ml Warm water
  • 15 ml Olive oil

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt together.

Step 2

In a small bowl, combine the yeast, sugar, and warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.

Step 3

Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil.

Step 4

Stir until the dough begins to come together, then transfer to a floured surface.

Step 5

Knead the dough for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Step 6

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp tea towel, and let it prove in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Step 7

Punch down the dough to remove air and shape it into an oval loaf. Transfer to a baking tray lined with parchment paper.

Step 8

Dust the top of the dough lightly with flour and make three deep diagonal slashes across the top using a sharp knife for the signature bloomer look.

Step 9

Cover the loaf loosely with a tea towel and allow it to prove again for 30 minutes.

Step 10

Preheat your oven to 220°C (200°C fan-assisted, 425°F). Place a small oven-safe dish of water on the bottom shelf to create steam for a crusty finish.

Step 11

Bake the bread in the center of the oven for 25 minutes until golden brown and the bottom sounds hollow when tapped.

Step 12

Remove from the oven and let the loaf cool completely on a wire rack before slicing or serving.
