Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh blackberries
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 0.5 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar
  • 0.25 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon onion powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon chili powder
  • 0.5 cup water

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the blackberries thoroughly under cool water and set them aside to drain.

Step 2

In a medium saucepan, combine the blackberries, water, and apple cider vinegar. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the blackberries break down and release their juices (about 10 minutes).

Step 3

Using the back of a spoon or a potato masher, crush the blackberries to release more juice. Remove the saucepan from heat and strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a bowl, pressing to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard the seeds and pulp.

Step 4

Return the strained blackberry liquid to the saucepan. Add the ketchup, brown sugar, honey, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, ground black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and chili powder. Stir well to combine.

Step 5

Place the saucepan back on medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.

Step 6

Taste the sauce and adjust seasonings if necessary, adding more sugar for sweetness, vinegar for tang, or paprika for smokiness.

Step 7

Remove the sauce from heat and let it cool to room temperature. Pour it into an airtight container or a jar and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to allow the flavors to meld together.

Step 8

Serve the Blackberry BBQ Sauce as a condiment or glaze over grilled meats, burgers, or roasted vegetables. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
