Ingredients

  • 2 sheets puff pastry sheets
  • 500 grams beef mince
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium, chopped onion
  • 2 cloves, minced garlic
  • 1 medium, grated carrot
  • 1 stalk, finely chopped celery
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 125 ml beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large, beaten egg
  • 1 tablespoon water

Directions

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 200°C (392°F). Line a baking tray with parchment paper.

Step 2

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes.

Step 3

Add garlic, grated carrot, and celery to the skillet. Sauté for another 5 minutes until veggies are softened.

Step 4

Increase the heat to medium-high and add the beef mince. Cook until browned, breaking apart lumps with a wooden spoon, approximately 5-7 minutes.

Step 5

Stir in the tomato paste, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 more minutes, until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

Step 6

Roll out the puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface. Cut each sheet into 4 equal squares.

Step 7

Place a generous spoonful of the beef mixture in the center of each square. Fold over to create a triangle or a rectangle, depending on your preference. Press the edges with a fork to seal well.

Step 8

Transfer the pastries to the prepared baking tray.

Step 9

Beat the egg with a tablespoon of water, creating an egg wash. Brush each pastry lightly with the egg wash to encourage browning.

Step 10

Bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes, or until the pastries are puffed and golden brown.

Step 11

Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving.
