Ingredients

  • 500 grams ground beef
  • 1 large yellow onions
  • 3 pieces garlic cloves
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 400 grams diced tomatoes (canned)
  • 0.5 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons black pepper
  • 5 medium potatoes
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 500 milliliters whole milk
  • 80 grams Parmesan cheese (grated)
  • 0.25 teaspoons nutmeg
  • 2 large eggs

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).

Step 2

Peel and slice the potatoes into 1/4-inch thick rounds. Place them in a large pot of salted water, bring to a boil, and cook for 5–7 minutes until just tender. Drain and set aside.

Step 3

Dice the onion and mince the garlic. In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Sauté the onions for 3–4 minutes until softened. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute.

Step 4

Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it into small pieces with a wooden spoon.

Step 5

Stir in the tomato paste, canned diced tomatoes, cinnamon, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and set aside.

Step 6

In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly, to form a roux.

Step 7

Gradually add the milk, whisking continuously to avoid lumps. Cook for 5–7 minutes until the sauce thickens. Stir in the nutmeg and half of the grated Parmesan cheese. Remove from heat and let the béchamel sauce cool for a few minutes.

Step 8

Once the sauce has cooled slightly, whisk in the eggs until smooth.

Step 9

In a greased baking dish, layer half of the potato slices on the bottom. Spread half of the beef mixture on top, followed by another layer of potatoes and the remaining beef mixture.

Step 10

Pour the béchamel sauce evenly over the top and sprinkle with the remaining Parmesan cheese.

Step 11

Bake in the preheated oven for 35–40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbling.

Step 12

Let the moussaka rest for 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm!
