Ingredients

  • 1 cup Toor dal (split pigeon peas)
  • 3 cups Water
  • 0.5 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 tablespoons Ghee
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • 0.25 teaspoon Asafoetida (hing)
  • 1 medium Onion, finely chopped
  • 2 medium Garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Ginger, grated
  • 1 medium Tomato, finely chopped
  • 1 small Green chili, finely chopped
  • 0.5 teaspoon Red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon Coriander powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon Garam masala
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh coriander leaves, chopped

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the toor dal thoroughly under running water until the water runs clear. Soak the dal in water for about 30 minutes to help it cook faster.

Step 2

In a pressure cooker, add the soaked dal, 3 cups of water, turmeric powder, and salt. Close the lid and cook over medium heat for 3-4 whistles or until the dal is soft and mushy.

Step 3

Once the pressure releases naturally, open the lid and mash the dal with a ladle for a smooth consistency. Set aside.

Step 4

In a large pan, heat ghee over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and allow them to splutter. Then, add asafoetida.

Step 5

Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown. Stir in the garlic and ginger, sautéing for an additional minute until fragrant.

Step 6

Add the chopped tomato and green chili to the pan. Cook until the tomato becomes soft and the oil separates from the mixture.

Step 7

Add red chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala. Stir well to mix the spices evenly with the onion-tomato mixture.

Step 8

Pour the cooked dal into the pan and mix everything together. Adjust the consistency by adding water if necessary. Bring the dal to a gentle boil.

Step 9

Simmer the dal for 5-7 minutes on low heat, allowing the flavors to meld together. Adjust seasoning by adding more salt if needed.

Step 10

Garnish the dal with fresh coriander leaves before serving. Serve hot with steamed rice or your choice of Indian bread.
